De Walhoeve in Westvleteren offers shelter to young people unable to live at home because of a problematic upbringing. The youth care centre is currently home to fifteen children and adolescents between the ages of 2.5 and 18. To expand the care provided, a third wing was added to the farmhouse building. The new construction’s design focuses on light and warmth. Discover how Pergo Public Extreme commercial laminate flooring easily meets these expectations. Pergo decided to assist the non-profit organisation by sponsoring the supply of the new floors.
We wanted to create an atmosphere of light and warmth, because that is what these children need
The new annex to the building is constructed entirely of wood. Architect Joëlle Debock knew this would add a sense of warmth to both the interior and exterior. “With young children around, traditional wooden floors are far from ideal due to the high risk of scratching and other damage. Laminate, however, was the perfect alternative”, the architect commented. “We chose Chalked Light Oak, because this flooring creates the look of wooden planks. Not only because of the bevelled edges on all four sides, but also because of its authentic wood texture”, Joëlle explains. “The light colour of the floor also adds a contemporary look. We wanted to create an atmosphere of light and warmth, because that is what these children need. Pergo laminate flooring ties in perfectly with this concept.”
The ground floor of the building is used for administration purposes. Upstairs, there are a number of multipurpose rooms where children can work on individual hobby projects, paint, do crafts or gather with their teachers. This is also where they receive friends and family. “We needed the floors to be really hard-wearing”, says director Bernard Velghe. “These rooms are used intensively. Pergo Public Extreme commercial laminate flooring was simply the most durable choice. The floor is extremely hard-wearing and resistant to water and scratches.”

The ease of maintenance of Pergo laminate flooring is a major advantage to the caretakers at the centre. “We know from experience that children show more respect when floors look clean and well-maintained”, says Bernard. “The antistatic surface of the floors, which repels dust and dirt, and its excellent resistance to wear, put our minds at ease.”
“As we didn't have the funds for a professional fitting, we decided to tackle this part of the project ourselves. Thanks to Pergo's ingenious click system, installing these floors was a breeze, and the result is simply amazing.”
“We’re not the only ones impressed with the result”, Bernard smiles. “The children, our staff and our visitors love our floors too. By choosing Pergo laminate flooring, we are showing people that we go for quality, on all levels.”
